
Since the Pre-Columbian era (before the 15th century), the Guarani people have used the leaves of the Stevia to soften the bitterness of their maté infusion. Its sweetness is equal to 40 times that of sugar. Dried and powdered Stevia leaves have been used as sweeteners for beverages in Latin America for centuries and in Aisan countries such as Japan for more than 30 years.
